Michael Greenstone, Director of the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago, interviews with Jiemian news on the global energy challenge and air pollution in China.

Greenstone, the founder of the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI), finds China’s drop in air pollution levels notable, not knowing “of another country that has achieved so much success in such a short period of time.” AQLI 2022 research found that the average life expectancy of Chinese residents has increased by two years due to the levels of air pollution decreasing.

The interview continues with Greenstone discussing market failures in combatting climate change, and the transformational change needed to address the challenge.

Greenstone also notes the important role universities can play in generating new ideas and partnerships as the U.S. and China seek to continue climate talks.
